GPA, CGPA, and Percentage: What's the Difference?

Different countries and institutions use different grading systems, which can make it challenging to compare academic performance internationally. This calculator converts seamlessly between the three most common systems: the 4.0 GPA scale (used primarily in the US and Canada), the 10.0 CGPA scale (standard across Indian universities), and percentage grades (used widely in the UK, Australia, and many other countries).

The 4.0 GPA Scale (US/Canada)

The 4.0 GPA (Grade Point Average) scale is the standard metric used by universities and colleges across the United States and Canada. Each letter grade corresponds to a numeric grade point value, and your GPA is the weighted average across all courses (weighted by credit hours):

  • A/A+ = 4.0 — Excellent
  • A− = 3.7
  • B+ = 3.3 | B = 3.0 | B− = 2.7 — Good
  • C+ = 2.3 | C = 2.0 | C− = 1.7 — Satisfactory
  • D+ = 1.3 | D = 1.0 — Passing
  • F = 0.0 — Failing

How to Calculate Your Weighted GPA

If you have multiple courses with different credit hours, your GPA is not a simple average — it must be weighted by credits. For example:

  • Course 1: A (4.0), 3 credits → 4.0 × 3 = 12 grade points
  • Course 2: B+ (3.3), 4 credits → 3.3 × 4 = 13.2 grade points
  • Course 3: C (2.0), 2 credits → 2.0 × 2 = 4 grade points
  • GPA = (12 + 13.2 + 4) ÷ (3 + 4 + 2) = 29.2 ÷ 9 = 3.24

This slider-based calculator converts between GPA, CGPA, and percentage proportionally — ideal for quick reference and cross-system comparison.

The 10.0 CGPA Scale (India)

The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) on a 10-point scale is used by CBSE, most IITs, NITs, and central universities in India. A CGPA of 9.0 is considered excellent, and 7.5+ is typically required for postgraduate program eligibility. The conversion formula used worldwide (including this calculator) is: GPA (4.0) = CGPA (10.0) ÷ 10 × 4.

Why GPA Matters

  • Graduate admissions: Most US graduate programs require a minimum 3.0 GPA; top programs typically expect 3.5+
  • Law and medical school: Extremely competitive — medians above 3.7 for top-ranked programs
  • Employment: Many large employers and consulting firms screen for GPA (typically 3.5+ threshold)
  • Scholarships: Most merit-based scholarships require a minimum GPA
  • Visa applications: Some student visa categories reference academic performance
