How to Measure for a Shirt

Accurate shirt sizing requires three measurements — chest, neck, and sleeve length (for dress shirts). Use a flexible measuring tape and measure over a thin undershirt or directly on skin for best accuracy. Dress shirts sizes like "15½ / 34" indicate neck circumference (15.5 inches) and sleeve length (34 inches).

  • Chest: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape horizontal and snug but not tight. This is the primary measurement for casual shirts, T-shirts, and polos.
  • Neck (for dress shirts): Measure around the base of your neck where a collar button would sit. Always add ½ inch for comfort — a shirt labeled 15.5" neck should measure 15.5" around your neck with room to move.
  • Sleeve length: Start at the center back of your neck, over your shoulder point, and down your arm to your wrist bone with the arm slightly bent. A 34" sleeve means 34 inches from neck center to wrist.

Why Sizes Vary Between Brands and Countries

There is no universal standard for clothing sizes. A "Medium" shirt at one brand can be equivalent to a "Large" at another. Key differences to know:

  • US/Canada vs UK: Generally use the same alpha sizes (S, M, L, XL) but numeric dress shirt sizes differ slightly by brand
  • EU sizes: Use numeric sizing (44, 46, 48, 50) based on chest measurement in centimeters. EU 48 typically corresponds to US/UK M.
  • Asian sizes run smaller: A "Large" in Japan or Korea is often equivalent to a US/EU "Medium." When shopping from Asian brands, size up by at least one size.
  • Plus sizes: US "1X" broadly aligns with EU sizes 56–58 and UK 2XL, but always check the specific brand's size chart for measurements.

Fit Types Explained

  • Regular/Classic Fit: Standard cut with room in the chest and torso. Comfortable and versatile. Best for most body types.
  • Slim/Fitted Fit: Narrower through the chest, waist, and arms. Creates a modern, tailored look. Best for lean or athletic builds.
  • Relaxed/Loose Fit: Extra room throughout for maximum comfort and movement. Common in workwear and casualwear.
  • Tall: Same chest measurement as regular, but longer body length and longer sleeves. Essential for those over 6'1" to avoid shirts untucking.

When between sizes, size up for comfort. When sizing for formal occasions, prefer a closer fit that can be tailored if needed.
