How X (Twitter) Revenue Sharing Works
X (formerly Twitter) launched its Ad Revenue Sharing program in 2023 under Elon Musk's ownership, becoming one of the few major social platforms to directly share advertising revenue with creators. However, the program has specific eligibility requirements and pays based on a unique model tied to ad impressions generated by and shown to verified users.
X Ad Revenue Sharing: Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for X's Ad Revenue Sharing program, your account must meet ALL of these requirements:
- X Premium subscription: Must be a paying X Premium (formerly Twitter Blue) subscriber
- Minimum follower count: At least 500 followers
- Impression threshold: At least 5 million organic impressions on your posts in the past 3 months
- Account standing: Account must comply with X's monetization policies and not have recent violations
How Payouts Are Calculated
Unlike YouTube (which pays based on ad views by all users), X's revenue sharing pays based on ads shown to X Premium subscribers who engage with your content. This is a controversial design choice that has resulted in significantly lower absolute payouts compared to YouTube for similar impression volumes.
Typical earnings reported by creators: $0.10–$0.50 per 1,000 impressions from verified/premium users. A post generating 1 million total impressions might generate $25–$250 in ad revenue, depending on how many of those impressions came from Premium subscribers and what ads were shown.
X Creator Subscriptions
X allows creators to offer paid Subscriptions to their followers, with monthly prices ranging from $2.99 to $19.99. X initially took 0% of subscription revenue, then moved to a split model — X takes 20% after any app store fees (Apple/Google take 30% of in-app purchases). Subscribers typically get benefits like subscriber-only posts, access to exclusive replies, and badges.
Tips and Super Follows
X users can send one-time tips to creators via third-party payment integrations (Stripe, Bitcoin). The platform takes a cut depending on the payment method selected. Tips are a minor but immediate income stream — particularly popular for journalists, analysts, and opinion leaders.
Is X Worth Monetizing?
X monetization pays significantly less than YouTube or even TikTok's Creator Rewards Program on a per-impression basis. However, X's value for creators is often in driving traffic to external products, newsletters, courses, and affiliate links rather than the in-platform monetization itself. Building a large, engaged X following can dramatically amplify income from other sources.
