What Is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is dummy text that has been the printing and typesetting industry's standard placeholder since the 1500s. Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not random gibberish — it derives from a work by the Roman philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero written in 45 BC called "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil). A section of this philosophical treatise on ethics was scrambled and adapted over the centuries to create the familiar text we know today. Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, traced Lorem Ipsum's origins to sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero's work, settling a mystery that had puzzled typographers for decades.

Why Designers Use Lorem Ipsum

The purpose of Lorem Ipsum is to provide a visually representative text block that allows designers and developers to focus on layout and typography without being distracted by readable content. If a design mockup used real English text, stakeholders would inevitably start reading and editing the copy instead of evaluating the design itself. Lorem Ipsum's Latin-like appearance provides a realistic distribution of letters and word lengths that closely mimics natural language patterns, making it superior to plain repeated text like "content here, content here." The text is also language-neutral, making it suitable for international projects where the final content language may not yet be determined.
